KOKODA WAR MEMORIALS SPRUCED UP BY TOWNSVILLE SUNRISE ROTARY CLUB

I July 2006kokoda3.jpg a team made of 6 Townsville Sunrise Rotarians upgraded the surrounds of Australia and Japanese War Memorials at Kokoda in Papua New Guinea.

These Memorials comemorate the memory of those Australians and Japanese who fought and died in some of the fiercest battles of World War II.

The team was led by Rotarian David Roderick, with Don Cumming, Leon Addisson, Byan Dobson, Robert Muller, and Miles Blucher.

They commented that it eerie to stand in the now lush tropical surrounds with coconut palm trunks that still bear the scars of bullets and holes made by shells fired over 50 years ago, and try to imagine the muddy hell it was back then.

The project was undertaken on behalf of the Australia War Graves Commission by Rotary and earned in excess of $15,000.00 for the Rotary Kokoda Hospital fund.

kokoda2.jpg The Kokoda hospital was built by the donated labour of over 400 Australian Rotarians as a thankyou for the assistance given to the Australians during the dark days of WW2.

The team cemented the surrounds of 5 Monuments and the front of the memorial museum and also gave assistance to the Kokoda Hospital by repairing electrical generators and other local facilities.
